The Arturo Falaschi PhD Fellowships are offered by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) to young scientists wishing to pursue their doctoral studies in a world-class international scientific environment. The program provides comprehensive funding for PhD candidates to conduct research at one of the ICGEB laboratories located in Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India), or Cape Town (South Africa).
The research focuses on a wide range of Life Sciences fields, including molecular biology, biotechnology, human health, industrial and agricultural biotechnology, and environmental biosafety.
Financial Benefits
This is a fully funded fellowship program. The benefits include:
- Monthly Stipend: A competitive monthly stipend is provided. The amount varies by location: €1,400 in Trieste, US$1,020 in New Delhi, and ZAR 15,000 in Cape Town.
- Travel Expenses: The fellowship includes provisions for travel to and from the ICGEB lab at the beginning and end of the fellowship.
- Health Insurance: Comprehensive medical health insurance coverage is provided for the duration of the fellowship.
- Tuition Support: All university registration fees are covered by the fellowship.
- Visa/Permit Support: Assistance is provided for obtaining a visa and residence permit.
Eligibility Criteria
- Nationality: Applicants must be nationals of an ICGEB Member State. Nationals of other countries may be considered if they can provide evidence that their country will become a member of the ICGEB.
- Age: Applicants must not be older than 32 years of age at the time of application.
- Education: Applicants must hold a BSc (Honours) degree or an MSc degree. Students who have completed their degree or will have completed it by the start of the fellowship are eligible.
- Language: A good working knowledge of English is required, as it is the language of instruction and research.
Application Process
Application Deadline: The annual deadline is typically March 31st. Therefore, the deadline for the 2026 intake is expected to be March 31, 2026.
Applications are submitted through the ICGEB’s online portal. The application requires a detailed CV, a statement of motivation, academic transcripts, and written statements from three academic referees.
