MEXT Scholarship for Japan Studies 2026

The Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is accepting applications for the 2026 cycle of the Japanese Studies Students program. This scholarship is designed specifically for undergraduate students who are currently majoring in fields related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture. It provides a one-year immersive study experience at a university in Japan.

Program Benefits

  • Tuition Waiver: Full coverage of entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees at the Japanese university.
  • Monthly Stipend: A monthly allowance (typically around 117,000 JPY, though this is subject to change) to cover living expenses.
  • Travel: Round-trip airfare from the recipient’s home country to Japan.
  • Cultural Immersion: A unique opportunity to deepen understanding of Japan through direct experience.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age.
  • Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at a university outside of Japan.
  • Major: Must be majoring in Japanese language or Japanese culture.
  • Return Requirement: Applicants must return to their home institution to complete their degree upon finishing the scholarship.
  • Exclusions: Students majoring in other fields (Engineering, Economy, Agriculture, etc.) who wish to study in Japan should apply for the JASSO Student Exchange Support Program instead.

  • Deadline: February 12, 2026.
  • How to Apply: Applications are typically processed through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in the applicant’s home country.
  • Selection: Involves a document review, a written exam (Japanese language), and an interview.
