NL SCHOLARSHIP (FORMERLY HOLLAND SCHOLARSHIP) 2026

by | Dec 31, 2025

The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science offers a financial boost to international students who want to study in the Netherlands. Specifically, this scholarship is meant for students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who are ready to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Consequently, selected students receive a one-time grant to help offset the costs of their first year of study.

Program Overview

This is a partnership between the government and Dutch research universities. Therefore, it is designed to attract global talent to the Dutch higher education system, known for its English-taught programs and innovative teaching style. By joining, you receive financial support and the prestige of being selected as an NL Scholar.

Key Benefits

The scholarship provides immediate financial relief during the expensive first year abroad. Specifically, the benefits include:

  • Financial Grant: A one-time payment of €5,000, €10,000, or €15,000 (depending on the specific university’s offer).
  • Reduced Burden: The funds can be used for tuition fees or living expenses.
  • Networking: Access to alumni events and the broader international student community in the Netherlands.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, an applicant must be a non-European citizen. Crucially, you must be applying for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s program at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions.

  • Nationality: You must be a national of a country outside the EEA.
  • Admission: You must have applied to a participating Dutch university (e.g., University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, etc.).
  • History: You must not have a degree from an education institution in the Netherlands.
  • English: You must meet the English proficiency requirements of your chosen university.

Application Process

  • Deadline: February 1, 2026 (Note: Some universities have a May 1 deadline, but Feb 1 is the primary round).
  • Submission: You apply directly through the university of your choice, usually at the same time as your program application.
  • Requirements: A letter of motivation and any specific documents requested by the university.
