AIMS South Africa/DeepMind AI for Science Master’s Scholarship 2026/2027

The AI for Science Master’s is an intensive, fully funded graduate program at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cape Town, South Africa. Each of the forty students selected for the program is supported by a full Google DeepMind scholarship. The program is designed for students from across Africa with a strong computational and mathematical background, providing state-of-the-art training in artificial intelligence and its applications to scientific disciplines.

Financial Benefits

This is a fully funded scholarship program.

  • Full Google DeepMind Scholarship: Every student admitted to the program receives a full scholarship which covers all costs, including tuition, travel, accommodation, and living expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of any country in Africa.
  • Residency: Must be a resident in Africa at the time of application (this requirement is not applicable to students displaced by war).
  • Education: Must have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with an honours year by August 2026 (or December 2026 for southern African applicants). This is equivalent to an M1 year in the French LMD system.
  • Academic Background: Your undergraduate degree can be in physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or any other discipline with a strong computational and mathematical component.
  • Previous AIMS Study: Applicants must not have held a previous scholarship to study at any AIMS centre.

Application Process

The application is a two-round process.

Application Deadline: Not yet announced for the 2026-27 academic year. The official page states that applications will open in December 2025.

Round 1: Online Selection Applicants must register at apply.aims.ac.za and upload the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • A motivation letter of around 500 words.
  • Academic transcripts.
  • Representative examples of work in the mathematical sciences.
  • A coding problem (details on the application site).

Round 2: Interviews Shortlisted candidates will be invited for short online interviews in May 2026.
