The British Academy International Fellowships provide a world-class opportunity for early-career researchers from around the globe to work at a UK host institution for two years. The program is designed to attract the most promising talent to the UK, fostering long-term international collaborations and enabling fellows to establish independent research careers.

Program Benefits

  • Duration: A fixed two-year fellowship.
  • Financial Support:
    • Salary: Funding is provided to the host institution to cover the fellow’s salary (comparable to a starting lecturer).
    • Research Expenses: Up to £12,000 for research-related costs.
    • Relocation: Up to £8,000 for relocation expenses.
  • Mentorship: Fellows work with a dedicated UK sponsor (mentor) at the host institution.
  • Alumni Status: Fellows become part of the British Academy’s global network of researchers.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Career Stage: Applicants must be “early-career” researchers, typically defined as holding a PhD for no more than 7 years.
  • Residency: Must be working outside the UK at the time of application.
  • Citizenship: Open to all nationalities (except UK citizens/residents).
  • Host Institution: Must have a confirmed UK host institution and a sponsor willing to support the application.
  • Discipline: Research must fall within the humanities or social sciences.

Application Process

  • Deadline: The input noted a review date of June 1, 2026, but the Application Deadline is typically in March 2026 (e.g., mid-March).
  • How to Apply: Applications are submitted via the British Academy’s Flexi-Grant management system.
  • Requirements: A detailed research proposal, CV, list of publications, and a statement of support from the UK host institution.
