The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) is accepting applications for its highly competitive General Internship programme. Specifically, this opportunity places graduate students at the heart of one of Europe’s leading defense and security think tanks. Consequently, interns contribute directly to policy reports for clients like the Dutch Ministry of Defence, NATO, and the European Commission.
Program Overview
This is a six-month, full-time position based in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice. Therefore, it is distinct from typical administrative internships; it is a research-intensive role requiring strong analytical skills. By joining, you work alongside senior analysts on topics ranging from cyber warfare and resource security to geopolitical coercion.
Key Benefits
The internship offers a rare paid opportunity in the think tank sector, along with high-level exposure. Specifically, the benefits include:
- Monthly Stipend: A salary of approximately €650 per month.
- Publication Credit: Interns often receive co-authorship credits on major reports, a massive boost for academic CVs.
- Networking: Daily interaction with policymakers, military officials, and diplomats in The Hague.
- Skill Development: Hands-on training in data-driven strategic foresight and policy writing.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, an applicant must be near the end of their studies or recently graduated. Crucially, candidates must have the legal right to work in the Netherlands (EU/EEA citizenship or a valid residence permit is highly preferred due to the short timeline).
- Education: Candidates must be enrolled in or have recently completed a Master’s degree in International Relations, Security Studies, Economics, or a related field.
- Skills: Excellent command of English (writing sample required). Quantitative skills (Excel/R/Python) are a significant advantage.
- Citizenship: Open to all, but preference is given to citizens of NATO/EU member states due to security clearance requirements for some projects.
- Duration: Must be available for 6 months full-time.
Application Process
- Deadline: January 4, 2026 (Midnight CET).
- Submission: You must submit your application via the HCSS website form.
- Requirements: A Curriculum Vitae (CV), a cover letter explaining your motivation, and a writing sample (max 2 pages).
