The Marlowe & Christie Novel Prize is currently accepting entries for its 2026 competition. Specifically, this prize is designed to discover talented, unpublished novelists by reviewing just the opening chapters of their work. Consequently, the winner receives a cash prize and, more importantly, gets their work placed directly in front of leading literary agents from the UK and US.
Program Overview
This is one of the most accessible literary prizes for aspiring authors. Therefore, unlike other competitions that require a full manuscript or a complex synopsis, this prize asks only for the first 3,000 words. By joining, you bypass the “slush pile” and have your work reviewed by industry professionals who are actively looking for new clients.
Key Benefits
The prize focuses on financial reward and career advancement. Specifically, the benefits include:
- Cash Prize: The winner receives £1,200 (approx. $1,600).
- Agency Exposure: The top three finalists receive feedback from elite literary agents, including Alec Shane (Writers House) and Jenny Hewson (Lutyens & Rubinstein).
- Shortlist Feedback: The top ten shortlisted entries receive written feedback from head judge Patrick Gleeson (author of Hattie Brings the House Down).
- Low Barrier: No need to have finished the whole book; you just need a polished opening.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, an applicant must be an unpublished novelist. Crucially, the prize is open to all genres (except children’s picture books) and all nationalities.
- Status: You must not be represented by a literary agent.
- Publication History: You must not have published a novel previously (self-published authors are eligible if the entered work is new).
- Word Count: You must submit exactly the opening 3,000 words of your novel.
- Genre: Open to all fiction genres for adults and young adults (YA).
Application Process
- Deadline: January 5, 2026 (Midnight GMT).
- Submission: You must upload your word document via the competition website.
- Entry Fee: There is a standard entry fee of £24 (Bronze package).
- Requirements: A Word document containing your 3,000 words. No personal details on the document (blind judging).
